Furman Volleyball Opens Southern Conference Play This Weekend

Greenville, S.C. – The Furman volleyball team will open their 16-game SoCon slate this weekend as they host Chattanooga (1-14, 0-0 SoCon) and Samford (9-6, 0-0 SoCon). Furman (4-7, 0-0 SoCon) will take on Chattanooga on Friday at 6:00 p.m., before hosting Samford on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Both games will take place in Alley Gym. 

The Paladins hold a 36-20 lead in the all-time series over Chattanooga. In the teams' only meeting last season, Furman captured a 3-1 victory over the Mocs at Alley Gym. Chattanooga is led by freshman Allie Davenport, who averages 2.66 kills per set and has totaled 141 kills on the year.

Furman also holds a 12-4 lead in the all-time series over Samford, who joined the Southern Conference in 2008. The teams also met just once in 2012, when the Bulldogs captured a 3-2 victory over the Paladins in Birmingham, Ala.  Samford is led offensively by sophomore Michaela Reesor, who has tallied 180 kills on the year for an average of 3.75 kills per set.

The Paladins are 1-0 at home in 2013 and have won four of their last six matches, with wins over Presbyterian, Rutgers, Sacred Heart, and South Carolina. As a team, Furman is averaging 12.17 kills per set and hitting .209.

  • After recording 17 digs vs. PC (Sept. 18), senior libero Elle Ross is now #10 on Furman's career-digs list (1,155).
  • Both Chattanooga (Travis Filar) and Samford's (Derek Schroeder) head coaches were on Michelle Young's coaching staff at one time.
  • Christina Dorismond has been named to the Delaware Invidational, the Big Orange Bash and Georgia Bulldog Invitational All-Tournament Teams this year.
  • Dorismond was named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week (9/12) for academic and athletic achievement.
  • Elle Ross was also named to the Delaware Invitational All-Touranment Team.
  • Three true freshman, two redshirt freshman and one transfer have seen action in the Paladins' first games of the 2013 season.
  • Freshman Ashton Gregory was named the Southern Conference Freshman of the Week for September 9.
  • Furman was picked to finish third by the SoCon's coaches.
  • Senior Christina Dorismond and junior Jo Wilks were named preseason All-Southern Conference.
