Greenville, S.C. -- Senior Lindsey Bert earned a save in game one, a victory in game two and went 4-for-7 at the plate to propel Furman to an 8-7, 10-2 doubleheader sweep of Gardner-Webb in non-conference softball action on Wednesday at Pepsi Stadium.
The sweep improved the Paladins to 24-6 on the season and extended their winning streak to six games. The Runnin' Bulldogs slipped to 20-14.
Starting game one as the designated player, Bert went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs to help the Paladins to an 8-6 lead. In the seventh, Gardner-Webb's Katie Stettler led off with a single and scored from first on Katie Prebble's double into the gap. After Prebble, representing the tying run, moved to third base on a fly out to centerfield, Bert entered the game in relief of starter Emily DeMonte and struck out Rachel Cumiskey and Maddi Johnson to preserve the victory.
DeMonte, who surrendered seven runs on eight hits of 6.1 innings, picked up the win to move to 9-0, while Bert earned her second save of the season.
Furman raced out to a 5-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the first and one more in the second. Bert, Emma Ogburn and DeMonte delivered RBI singles as part of the four-run first inning before Caroline Cash plated Lauren Duggar with an RBI single in the second after the Paladin leadoff hitter singled and stole second base.
The Paladins led 6-2 through four innings, but Gardner-Webb rallied with a solo homer from Prebble in the fifth and three runs in the sixth, highlighted by Jenna Wacaster's two-run, pinch-hit double. Furman regained the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth as Bert started a two-out rally with a double to left field and Hannah Reynolds was hit by a pitch to give the Paladins two runners. Pinch runner Caroline Nageotte scored on AnnaRose Borrelli's single to center and Reynolds raced home with the eventual winning run on a throwing error.
Borrelli finished 2-for-3 at the plate while Cash and DeMonte also registered two hits apiece in game one as Furman pounded out a season-high 13 hits.
Ashley Wark (12-8) took the loss for the Runnin' Bulldogs allowing eight runs. She fanned five and walked two in six innings of work.
In the nightcap, Bert limited Gardner-Webb to a pair of runs on two hits over five innings and the Paladins tallied 10 runs on just five hits to claim the five-inning victory.
Furman plated six runs in the first inning on just three hits. Johnson laced an RBI double to the opposite field and Brittany Houston lined a two-run single up the middle to key the rally.
Prebble's two-run blast got Gardner-Webb on the board in the third, but Furman answered with back-to-back solo homers from DeMonte and Ogburn to up the lead to 8-2. The Paladins added a pair of unearned runs in the fourth to help force the mercy rule.
Bert fanned five batters in game two to improve to 15-4 in the circle. Sam Harrell (3-2) took the loss for Gardner-Webb while allowing six runs on three hits over just two-thirds of an inning.
Furman opens Southern Conference play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at preseason league favorite UNCG before capping the three-game series with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday's contest will be streamed live on ESPN3.
