Lexington, Ky. -- Kentucky scored from the penalty spot in the 71st minute to edge Furman, 1-0, in non-conference women's soccer action at the rain-drenched Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington, Ky., on Sunday afternoon.

Furman was whistled for a foul in the top corner of the box at the 70:07 mark and Yuuka Kurosaki slotted her shot past Paladin goalkeeper Kellsey Weaver from the penalty spot for the lone goal of the match.

The loss dropped Furman to 4-2-0 on the season, while Kentucky improved to 4-4-0.

"We gave a great effort today and played extremely physical, but came up a little short in the end," said Paladin head coach Andrew Burr. "College of Charleston is coming to town on Thursday, so we will turn our attention to that match and continue our preparation for Southern Conference play."

The Paladins created several scoring opportunities, including a pair of point-blank chances in the opening two minutes of the second half. With the match knotted at 0-0, Stephanie Arrington found herself alone on the left side of the box and fired a goal-bound shot that UK goalkeeper Hannah Leonard got a hand on to push the effort wide of the left post. On the ensuing corner kick, Erin O'Hearn sent a ball into the middle of the box that Claudia Murphy fired on goal from inside five yards, but Leonard's quick reaction denied the Paladins a go-ahead score.

Kentucky and Furman finished with 11 shots apiece, while the visitors managed a 5-3 edge in shots on target. Leonard totaled fives saves for the Wildcats and Weaver turned away one shot for Furman.
