Totland Third, Paladins Fourth At Clemson Invitational

LAKE KEOWEE, S.C. -- Taylor Totland (-3) fired a 69 to tie for third to lead the Furman women's golf team Friday in the opening round of the Clemson Invitational at the par-72, 6,263 yard The Reserve at Lake Keowee.

Totland, a junior from Tinton Falls, N.J., paced the Paladins with three birdies on the day to conclude the round two strokes back of individual leader Jennifer Hahn (-5) of Vanderbilt, who carded an opening-round 67.

Sophomores Alice Chen (+1) and Jacqueline Bendrick (+1) and freshman Haylee Harford (+1) are tied for 28th after the Paladin trio each scored a one-over 73 in Friday's round.  Harford birdied No. 6 and No. 16, while Bendrick added birdies on No. 13 and the par-5 No. 17.  

Senior Valentina Romero (+3) and sophomore Reona Hirai (+3), who is playing as an individual, tied for 45th after the first round of play.  Romero carded three birdies, including back-to-back birdies on No. 17 and No. 18 to conclude the round, while Hirai birdied No. 1 and No. 9.

No. 8 Florida (-4) leads 29th-ranked Houston (-3) by one stroke after carding a 284 on Friday, and No. 46 Michigan State (-1) sits in third.  No. 33 Furman (E) is tied for fourth with 47th-ranked Clemson (E) after shooting an opening-round 288, tying the Paladins' second-best round of the season.  Oklahoma (+1), No. 32 Augusta (+1), and 42nd-ranked Vanderbilt (+1) are tied for 6th, while 19th-ranked Tennessee (+3) and No. 22 Texas A&M (+4) complete the top 10.

Furman, ranked 33rd nationally, is joined in the 14-team field by Boston College, #46 Clemson, #8 Florida, #34 Augusta, #28 Houston, Kennesaw State, #47 Michigan State, Oklahoma, #19 Tennessee, #32 Texas A&M, UNC Wilmington, #42 Vanderbilt, and Virginia Tech.

"The girls were very consistent today and played solidly," said Furman women's golf head coach Kelley Hester, who is in her fourth year at the helm of the Paladin program.  "We finished well, making five birdies in our final three holes."

The Paladins will tee off in the second round of the 54-hole tournament Saturday at 10:15 a.m. from hole No. 1.  The tournament will conclude with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday.  Admission to the tournament is free and fans are welcome.  Live tournament scoring will also be available via
