Wolcott, Col. – Furman's Laura Wearn (+8) posted a four-over 76 to lead the Paladins (+65) to a 17th place finish on Wednesday in the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the par-72 Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, Colo.
The Charlotte, N.C., native, starting at No. 11 for the shotgun start, birdied her first two holes and three of her first six en route to the Paladins' best score on the final day of the 54-hole tournament. Freshman Stephanie Carlozzi (+15), who began the round in a tie for 16th place, struggled to a 12-over 84 and was forced to settle for 49th place. Fellow freshman Valentina Romero carded her third straight seven-over 79 on Wednesday.
Pepperdine (-4) fashioned a three-under 285 to claim the tournament title with UC Davis taking second place at one-over par. Oklahoma (+17), Campbell (+30) and Denver (+31) rounded out the top five in the 18-team field.
Second round leader Demi Runas of UC Davis held on to claim individual medalist honors after shooting a one-under 71 on Wednesday. She edged second place Fabiola Arriaga of UTSA by three strokes.
Furman will be idle for the next week before returning to action October 12-14 at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship in Knoxville, Tenn.
