Wolcott, Col. – Freshman Stephanie Carlozzi fired a first round 72 to earn a share of 12th place and help the Furman women's golf team into 11th through 18 holes at the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Monday at the par-72 Red Sky Golf Club.
Playing in just her second collegiate tournament, Carlozzi opened her round with three birdies on the back nine before recording a birdie at the par-five, No. 2 and an eagle at the par-four, No. 3. Carlozzi, a native of Naples, Fla., trails first round leader Chirapat Jao-Javanil (-4) of the University of Oklahoma by four strokes entering Tuesday's second round.
Senior Laura Wearn (+3) recorded only one birdie, but pared 13 holes to finish with an opening round 75 and a share of 28th place. Sophomore Laura DeMarco (+7) and freshman Valentina Romero (+7) both carded a seven-over 79 on Monday.
Pepperdine (-2) and Oklahoma (-2) each began tournament play with a 286 to grab a six-stroke lead over third place UC Davis (+4). Campbell and East Tennessee State are tied for fourth place in the 18-team field at 10-over.
Second round play is set for Tuesday morning. Furman begins play from the No. 10 tee at 10:15 a.m. MT.
