Florence, S.C. -- The Furman men’s golf team opened the season with rounds of 290 and 279 to grab fourth place after 36 holes at the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate at the par-72 Country Club of South Carolina on Monday.
Senior Daniel Bowden led the way following a first round 70 with a three-under 69 second round that propelled the Paladins to a nine-under 279. Bowden holds a share of ninth place entering Tuesday’s final round. Greenville, S.C., native Garland Ferrell (73-68=141) carded a second round 68 to move into 16th place while Austin Reeves and Matt Broome each carded a one-under 71 in round two.
Furman trails first place USC Aiken (282-278=560) by nine strokes. Western Carolina, Georgia Southern, Furman and Charleston Southern rounded out the top five after 36 holes. Appalachian State’s Casey Johnson (69-67=136) leads the individual standings at eight-under.
Final round play is slated for Tuesday morning.
