Furman's Harper Chosen SoCon Player Of The Year; Crosby Named SoCon Freshman Of The Year At SoCon Championship

PINEHURST, N.C. -- Furman junior Keller Harper was chosen the Southern Conference Men's Golf Player of the Year for the second-consecutive season, while Paladin rookie Jack Crosby was voted the SoCon Freshman of the Year following Tuesday's final round of the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship at Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, N.C.  The Jack Nicklaus Signature course, which served as the site of the championships for the sixth-consecutive year, played at par-72, 7,118 yards.

A native of Atlanta, Ga., Harper, who was named to the All-Southern Conference team for the second-straight year, led the league and the Paladins with a 71.00 stroke average entering this week's league championship tournament.  He won individual medalist honors at both the River Run Collegiate in the fall and at the Furman Invitational in March.  In 11 events this season, he recorded four top-5 finishes and six top-10 finishes.

Crosby, who hails from Memphis, Tenn., also earned a spot on the SoCon All-Freshman team.  He won individual medalist honors at the Camden Collegiate Invitational in October and at the Wofford Invitational earlier this month.  He ranks third on the Paladin team and 12th in the league with a 72.61 stroke average entering this week's championship.

Harper (+4) and junior Stephen Reynolds (+4) tied for sixth to pace the Paladins at the league championship.  Harper carded an even 72 with three birdies in the final round, while Reynolds notched a final-round 76 with a birdie on No. 2.  The Paladin duo finished 15 strokes back of individual medalist Shiso Go (-11) of ETSU, who beat UNCG's Nick Lyerly (-11) on the second playoff hole to earn medalist honors and the SoCon's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.

Senior Scott Purvis (+6) tied for 15th after recording a 75 with a birdie on No. 8 in Tuesday's round, and Crosby (+8) and senior Connor Bruns (+8) finished in a tie for 19th.  Bruns fired a 70 with a team-high five birdies in his final collegiate round, while Crosby shot a 75 with birdies on No. 8 and No. 14.

"Keller and Jack are both so deserving of these awards," said Furman head coach Matt Davidson.  "To win player of the year twice in a row is an incredible accomplishment for Keller and a testament to his consistency and hard work.  It was also so much fun to see Jack come into his own this season.  To win twice as a freshman is remarkable and not something that many people have done.  We're definitely looking forward to having both of them back next year."

UNCG (-10) won the title by ten strokes over runner-up ETSU (E), earning the SoCon's automatic bid to the NCAA regionals. Chattanooga (+11)  finished third, followed by the Paladins (+16) in fourth.  Mercer (+17) rounded out the top five.
