PINEHURST, N.C. -- Junior Stephen Reynolds (E) fired a second-round 69 to move into a tie for fifth to lead the Furman men's golf team Monday at the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship at Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, N.C. The Jack Nicklaus Signature course, which is serving as the site of the championships for the sixth-consecutive year, is playing at par-72, 7,118 yards.
Reynolds, a native of Greenville, S.C., birdied three out of four holes beginning with No. 3 and turned at two-under. He then eagled the par-5 No. 10 and added a team-high fourth birdie on No. 13 to finish the round six strokes back of leader Nick Lyerly (-6) of UNCG, who holds a two-round total of 69-69=138.
Senior Scott Purvis (+3) carded a 74 with birdies on No. 5 and No. 15 in Monday's second round, tying for 10th, while junior Keller Harper (+4) is one stroke back of Purvis in a tie for 15th after adding a 77 with birdies on No. 4 and No. 8. Redshirt freshman Jack Crosby (+5) notched birdies on three of four holes from No. 6 through No. 9 to finish with a second-round 74. He is tied for 17th place entering Tuesday's final round. Senior Connor Bruns (+10) shot a 78 with a birdie on No. 10 and is in 29th place.
UNCG (+1) holds a four stroke lead at the conclusion of Monday's second round. East Tennessee State (+5) is in second place, followed by Chattanooga (+7) in third. The Paladins (+12) are tied for fourth place with Mercer (+12).
The 54-hole tournament will conclude on Tuesday, and teams will tee off of No. 1 and No. 10 beginning at 7:30 a.m. Furman will tee off of No. 1 starting at 7:30 a.m. and will play in twosomes with Chattanooga Admission is free and fans are welcome.
