PINEHURST, N.C. -- Sophomore Keller Harper (-1) is tied for sixth to pace the Furman men's golf team following the first round of play Sunday at the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship at Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, N.C. The Jack Nicklaus Signature course, which is serving as the site of the championships for the sixth-consecutive year, is playing at par-72, 7,118 yards.
A native of Atlanta, Ga., Harper carded consecutive birdies on No. 2 and No. 3 and again on No. 7 and No. 8. He added a fifth birdie on No. 14 to finish the day with a one-under 71. Harper enters Monday's second round three strokes back of Zack Swanson (-4) of UNCG, who led the field with an opening round 68.
Senior Scott Purvis (+1) recorded two birdies on the front and one on the back for an opening round 73, tying for 12th. Redshirt freshman Jack Crosby (+3) and junior Stephen Reynolds (+3) each shot a 75 on Sunday to tie for 19th. Crosby scored five birdies, including three-consecutive birdies from No. 8 through No. 10, while Reynolds notched a birdie on No. 8. Senior Connor Bruns (+4) carded a 76 with back to back birdies on No. 4 and No. 5 to tie for 23rd.
UNCG (-5), the only team to shoot under par on Sunday, leads the field by six strokes after Sunday's opening round. East Tennessee State (+1) and Mercer (+1) are tied for second, followed by the Paladins (+6) in fourth place. Chattanooga (+8) rounds out the top five.
The 54-hole tournament continues on Monday, and teams will tee off of No. 1 beginning at 8 a.m. Furman will tee off of starting at 9:30 a.m. and will play in a twosomes with Mercer. The tournament concludes on Tuesday. Admission is free and fans are welcome.
