SALEM, S.C. -- Junior Keller Harper (-5) fired an opening round 67 to lead the Furman (-3) mens' golf team Friday in the Clemson Invitational at the par 72, 7,103 The Cliffs at Keowee Falls in Salem, S.C.
A native of Atlanta, Ga., Harper started the shotgun round on No. 14 and made the first of seven birdies on No. 18. He tallied consecutive birdies on No. 2 and No. 3 then scored three-straight from No. 8 through No. 10. He finished the day three strokes back of leader Adrien Pendaries (-8) of Duke, who carded an opening round 64.
Senior Scott Purvis (-3) is tied for ninth after scoring a 69 with four birdies, including back to back birdies on No. 10 and No. 11, while junior Connor Bruns (-2) enters Saturday's second round tied for 16th. Bruns tallied a 70 with five birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 8 and No. 9 on Friday.
No. 8 Georgia Tech (-16) holds a one-stroke lead over 14th-ranked Georgia (-15) after one round of play. Ninth-ranked Duke (-13) sits in third, followed by No. 17 Clemson (-5) in fourth place. Virginia (-4) completes the top five, followed by Furman (-3) in sixth.
The 54-hole tournament continues on Saturday. Teams will tee off of No. 1 and No. 10 beginning at 9 a.m. Furman will tee off of No. 1 starting at 9:50 a.m. and will play in a group with Clemson and Virginia. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
