PINEHURST, N.C. -- Furman sophomore Keller Harper (-1) is tied for the individual lead following the second day of play Monday at the Southern Conference Championships at Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, N.C. The Jack Nicklaus Signature course, which is serving as the site of the championships for the fifth-consecutive year, is playing at par-72, 7,118 yards.
Harper, who hails from Atlanta, Ga., fired a 70 with a team-high four birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 7 and No. 8, to finish the day in a four-way tie for first at 73-70-143 with three players from UNC Greensboro, Bryce Hendrix, Nick Lyerly, and Josh Stockwell.
Junior Connor Bruns (+4) is tied for ninth entering Tuesday's final round after carding a 73 with three birdies on Monday, and sophomore Matt Lehman (+8) sits alone in 17th place after scoring a 76 with birdies on No. 1 and No. 15 in round two.
Senior Hunter Nichols (+12) moved up into a tie for 22nd following Monday's round, where he recorded a 75 with birdies on No. 7 and No. 11, and sophomore Scott Purvis (+14) finished the second round in a tie for 27th after adding an 81 on Monday.
UNC Greensboro (+6) surged into the lead on Monday. The Spartans were the only team under par for the day, leading the field with a 285. Chattanooga (+18) and ETSU (+18) are tied for second, 12 strokes back of UNC Greensboro, while the Paladins (+19) are just one stroke out of second place.
The 54-hole tournament will conclude on Tuesday, weather permitting, with teams teeing off of No. 1 and No. 10 beginning at 7:30 a.m.
