AIKEN, S.C. -- Senior Bryce Howell (+4) and sophomore Connor Bruns (+4) are tied for 28th to lead the Furman men's golf team after the opening day of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par 70, 6,617 yard Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
Howell fired an opening round 68 with five birdies, including four on the front nine, then added a 76 with three birdies on the back in the second round. Bruns carded a 76 in the morning round then paced the Paladins with a 68 and a team-high six birdies in the afternoon round.
Junior Hunter Nichols (+7) enters Tuesday's final round tied for 49th. Nichols scored a 72 with birdies on No. 1 and No. 11 in the morning round and added a 75 with four birdies in round two. Sophomore Garrison Hogan birdied No. 16 and No. 18 for a 77 in the first round and shot a 72 with four birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 17 and No. 18, in Monday's second round. Freshman Keller Harper (+11) recorded a round one 78 then scored a 73 with three birdies in the day's second round to tie for 70th.
Clemson's Doc Redman (-6), who is ranked 34th nationally, and Derek Bard (-6) of Virginia, the nation's 94th ranked player, are tied for the individual lead after each scored rounds of 65 and 69 on Monday.
Third-ranked Virginia (-17) holds a three-stroke lead over No. 16 Clemson (-14). Augusta (-2) is in third place, followed by No. 39 South Carolina (+6) and East Carolina (+7). Furman (+21) is in 11th place entering Tuesday's final round.
The tournament will conclude on Tuesday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Furman will tee off of holes 10 through 12 and will play in a group with USC Aiken and Akron. Live tournament scoring will also be available via www.golfstat.com.
