JONESBOROUGH, TENN. -- Senior Bryce Howell (-7) moved up two spots into a tie for eighth to lead the Furman men's golf team Saturday at the 19th annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate this weekend at the par 72, 7,147 yard Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough, Tenn.
After carding a 69 on Friday, Howell fired a 68 in round two with five birdies, including back-to-back birdies on No. 8 and No. 9 for the second-straight day, to finish the round four strokes behind individual leader Derek Bard (-11) of Virginia, who leads the field at 66-67=133 after two days.
Sophomore Connor Bruns (+3) shot an even 72 with consecutive birdies on No. 14 and No. 15 and an additional birdie on No. 12 to tie for 54th, while redshirt freshman Jake Reilly (+5) and freshman Stephen Cerbara (+5) are tied for 60th. Cerbara posted a 74 with four birdies, including birdies on three of four holes from No. 5 through No. 8, while Reilly added a 78 with two birdies. Junior Hunter Nichols (+12) is tied for 79th entering the final round.
No. 17 Virginia (-27) surged into the lead after firing a 269 on Saturday. No. 24 Missouri (-16) is second, followed by East Tennessee State (-13) in third. Fourteenth-ranked Ken State (-12) is fourth, and UNC Wilmington (-11) stands in fifth entering Sunday's final round. The Paladins (+6) are in 14th place after two rounds.
The 54-hole tournament will conclude on Sunday, with the Paladins teeing off of No. 10 beginning at 9:50 a.m. Furman will be paired in a group with Tennessee and Villanova. Admission to the tournament is free and fans are welcome. Live tournament scoring will also be available via www.golfstat.com.
