JONESBOROUGH, TENN.-- Senior Bryce Howell (-3) is tied for tenth to lead the Furman men's golf team at the 19th annual Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate this weekend at the par 72, 7,147 yard Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough, Tenn.
Howell fired a 69 with four birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 8 and No. 9, to finish the round four strokes behind individual leader Thomas Eldridge (-7) of UNC Wilmington, who led the field with an opening round 65.
Redshirt freshman Jake Reilly (-1) is tied for 22nd after carding a 71 with a team-best six birdies on Friday. Sophomore Connor Bruns (+3), junior Hunter Nichols (+3), and freshman Stephen Cerbara (+3) are all tied for 61st heading into Saturday's second round. The Paladin trio each shot a 75, with Cerbara notching four birdies, including back-to-back birdies on No. 13 and No. 14. Bruns added three birdies, while Nichols tallied two birdies in the first round.
No. 24 Missouri (-11) leads the field after firing a 277 on Friday to hold a one-stroke lead over UNC Wilmington (-10). No. 17 Virginia (-8) is in third, followed by East Tennessee State (-7) in fourth. Louisville (-5) and VCU (-5) are tied for fifth. The Paladins (+2) stand in tenth place following one round of play.
The 54-hole tournament will continue on Saturday, with the Paladins teeing off of No. 1 beginning at 9:20 a.m. Furman will be paired in a group with Kansas State and Tennessee.
