CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-- Sophomore Connor Bruns (-1) is tied for 13th to lead the Furman men's golf team following the opening day of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate at the par 72, 7,242 yard UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Bruns fired a 70 with five birdies, all on the front nine, in the morning then added a 73 with three birdies in the afternoon round to finish the day five strokes behind individual leaders Alfredo Ruiz (-6) of Coastal Carolina and UNC Greensboro's Jake McGlone (-6), who lead the field with a two-round total of 138.
Senior Bryce Howell (+3) enters the final round tied for 37th. Howell carded a 73 with a birdie on No. 17 in round one then posted a 74 with four birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 7 and No. 8, in the second round. Freshman Stephen Cerbara (+13) and rookie Matt Lehman (+13) are tied for 70th, and sophomore Garrison Hogan (+20) is in 79th place.
UNC Wilmington (-9) holds a three-stroke lead over 30th-ranked North Carolina (-6). UNC Greensboro and Maryland (-3) are tied for third, and Liberty (-2) completes the top five.
The 54-hole tournament will conclude on Sunday, weather permitting, with a shotgun start scheduled for 9 a.m. Admission to the tournament is free and fans are welcome. Live tournament scoring will also be available via www.golfstat.com.
