AKRON, OHIO -- Senior Bryce Howell (-5) is tied for seventh to lead the Furman men's golf team following the opening day of the Firestone Invitational at the par 72, 7,125 yard Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
Howell fired a 69 with five birdies in the morning round then added a 70 with three birdies in the afternoon round to finish the day two strokes back of leader Austin Squires (-7) of Cincinnati, who carded a 69 in the morning and 68 in the afternoon to lead the field at 137.
Sophomore Connor Bruns (-4) is tied for ninth entering Tuesday's final round. Bruns shot a 71 with four birdies in the morning then fired an afternoon 69 with five birdies, including back-to-back birdies on both No. 1 and No. 2 then again on No. 5 and No. 6.
Freshman Stephen Cerbara (+6) made his collegiate debut, shooting a 78 in the morning then carding an even 72 with three birdies in the afternoon to tie for 58th. Redshirt freshman Jake Reilly is tied for 77th, and sophomore Garrison Hogan is tied for 83rd.
Illinois State (-14) leads the field, while Akron (-12) is in second place. Cincinnati (-9) and Dayton (-9) are tied for third, and Eastern Michigan (-8) completes the top five.
The 54-hole tournament will conclude on Tuesday. The Paladins will tee off of No. 10 at 10 a.m. Admission to the tournament is free and fans are welcome. Live tournament scoring will also be available via www.golfstat.com.
