Paladins Second, Howell Third At SoCon Championships

PINEHURST, N.C. – Junior Bryce Howell (-2) fired a 70 to tie for third place Sunday in the opening round of the 2016 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship at the par-72, 7,091 yard Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, N.C. 

The Paladins (+2) shot a 290 to conclude the first round in second place, just three strokes behind leader ETSU (-1) who carded an opening-round 287.  Wofford (+3) is in third, while Chattanooga (+4) and UNCG (+7) complete the top five.

Howell, a native of Blythewood, S.C., carded a team-best five birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 15 and No. 16 to finish the first round two strokes back of Wofford's Jeremy Grab (-4), who scored a 68 to lead the field after the first round of ply.  

Senior Wehman Hopke (-1) birdied No. 9 and No. 15 to finish tied for seventh with a first-round 72, while rookie Garrison Hogan (+1) is in 12th place after scoring birdies on No. 4 and No. 9 to finish the round one over at 73.  Freshman Connor Bruns (+3) scored a 75 with birdies on No. 9 and No. 15 to tie for 18th, and senior Preston Cole (+10) is tied for 39th entering Monday's second round.

Second round action is slated for Monday at 8 a.m. with the Paladins scheduled to tee off of No. 1 beginning at 10:15 a.m.  Final round action will take place on Tuesday morning.  The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA regional, while the individual medalist will also earn an automatic regional qualification.
