LAKE KEOWEE, S.C. -- Three Paladins scored a one-over 73 to tie for 18th to lead the Furman men's golf team Friday in the first round of the Clemson Invitational at the par-72, 7,103-yard The Cliffs at Keowee Falls.
Senior Wehman Hopke (+1), junior Bryce Howell (+1), and rookie Garrison Hogan (+1) each carded an opening round 73 to finish Friday's play six strokes back of individual leader Austin Langdale (-5) of Clemson, who fired a 67 in round one.
Hopke and Hogan paced the team with three birdies on the day, while Howell added birdies on No. 2 and No. 18. Senior Preston Cole (+4) birdied No. 1 and scored an opening-round 76 to conclude Friday's action tied for 39th, while freshman Connor Bruns (+15) is in 65th place after shooting an 87 in round one.
Eleventh-ranked Clemson (-12) holds a nine stroke lead over Louisville (-3). No. 47 Georgia Tech (E) is third, and No. 41 Michigan State (+3) stands in fourth after one round of play. Winthrop (+5) is in fifth place, while Elon (+6) is sixth, and the Paladins (+7) are in seventh place entering Saturday's second round.
The 12-team men's field includes Furman, Boston College, #11 Clemson, Elon, #47 Georgia Tech, Louisville, #41 Michigan State, Notre Dame, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, and Winthrop.
Second-round action of the 54-hole tournament will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. and the tournament will conclude on Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. Admission to the tournament is free and fans are welcome. Live tournament scoring will also be available via www.golfstat.com.
