BURLINGTON, IOWA -- Freshman Connor Bruns (+4) fired a second-round 71 to lead the Furman men's golf team Saturday in the second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the par 72, 7,223 yard Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa.
Bruns started on No. 10 and made the turn at one-under then birdied the par-5 No. 2 and added a birdie on No. 5 to finish the day one under par. Bruns enters Sunday's final round tied for 40th. Senior Wehman Hopke (+6) birdied No. 15 and No. 18 to tie for 50th with a second-round 74, while seniors Preston Cole and junior Bryce Howell each carded a 75 on Sunday and will start the final round tied for 59th. Cole birdied No. 10 and No. 12 to start the match then finished the round with a birdie on No. 9. Senior Preston Heyward eagled the par-5 No. 4 and scored three consecutive birdies on No. 18 and No. 1 and 2 at the turn, concluding the day in 64th place.
Iowa (-19) surged into the lead with a 15-under 273 on Saturday. North Carolina State (-12) dropped into second place, followed by Kansas State (-7) in third. Furman (+28) is in 15th place following two rounds.
The 54-hole tournament will conclude with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday. Admission to the tournament is free and fans are welcome. Live tournament scoring will also be available via www.golfstat.com.
