Hopke & Cole Tied For Tenth At SoCon Championship After First Round Of Play

PINEHURST, N.C. – Juniors Wehman Hopke (+1) and Preston Cole (+1) each fired a 73 to tie for tenth place following Sunday's first round of play at the 2015 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship at the par-72, 7,091 yard Pinehurst No. 9 in Pinehurst, N.C.  

Hopke scored birdies on No. 4 and No. 10, while Cole notched birdies on No. 7 and No. 18 to finish among an eight-way tie for tenth, five strokes back of Western Carolina's J.T. Poston (-6), the reigning SoCon Player of the Year, who led his fourth straight round in the SoCon tournament, as he was the wire-to-wire winner in 2014.

Paladin sophomore Bryce Howell (+4) is in 25th place after birdieing No. 10 to card a 76 on Sunday, while freshman Adam Garrett is tied for 27th after scoring a birdie on the par-3 No. 9 to finish the round at 78.  Senior Michael Borton, who birdied No. 3 and No. 12, is tied for 33rd.

ETSU (-2) leads Wofford (+1) by three strokes following one day of competition.  Chattanooga (+3) is third, while UNCG (+6) and Mercer (+9) round out the top five.  Seeking their first title since 2010, the Paladins are in seventh (+12) after Sunday's round.

Second round action is slated for Monday at 8 a.m. with the Paladins scheduled to tee off of No. 10 beginning at 8:20 a.m.  Final round action will take place on Tuesday morning.  The winner of the SoCon Championship will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA regional, while the individual medalist will also earn an automatic regional qualification.
