Daniel Island, S.C. – Senior Matt Brown posted a four-over 76 to lead the Furman men's golf team during a windy opening round of the 2013 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship on Sunday at the par-72 Ralston Creek Course.
After shooting four-over on the front nine and bogeying No. 10, Brown (+4) birdied the par-five No. 11 and played the back nine at even par to hold a share of 11th place after 18 holes. Furman's Michael Borton (+9) and Wehman Hopke (+9) each carded an 81 as the Paladins (+32) posted an opening round 320 to hold ninth place.
Davidson (+9) shot a first round 297 to hold a one-stroke lead over second place Chattanooga (+10) with Appalachian State in third place at 17-over par. The Wildcats' Todd Eckstein grabbed the first round lead with a one-under 71 while Chattanooga's Steven Fox and UNCG's Taylor Coalson are tied for second place at even par.
Second round play is slated for Monday morning with the final round of the 54-hole tournament set for Tuesday. The winner of the SoCon Championship will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA regionals.
