Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. – Freshman Preston Cole carded a second round 75 to pace the Furman men's golf team on Monday in the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational at the par-72, 6,988-yard Sawgrass Country Club.
Playing as an individual, Cole birdied two of his first five holes to shoot a three-over-par 75 and maintain a share of 43rd place thru 36 holes. The Riverside High School product and Greer, S.C., native shot a 37 on the back nine before posting a 38 on the front nine in second round play after carding an identical three-over 75 on Sunday.
Seniors Matt Brown (+4) and Anthony Aloi (+5) each carded a four-over 76 on Monday to lead the Paladins to a 24-over 312 in second round play as Furman (+37) slipped to 15th place entering the final 18 holes.
The University of North Florida (-17) strengthened its hold on the tournament lead with a five-under 283 to move 12 strokes ahead of second place Duke (-5) and hold a 26-stroke advantage on third place UCF (+9).
UNF's Kevin Phelan followed his tournament record 64 on Sunday with a five-under 67 on Monday morning to hold a four-stroke lead over teammate and second place Sean Dale.
Final round action is slated for 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The 15-team John Hayt Collegiate Invitational field includes 10 of the top-50 teams in the nation entering the spring season.
