Daniel Island, S.C. – Senior Austin Reeves fired an opening round 72 to grab a share of sixth place and help the Furman men's golf team into a tie for fifth place on Sunday in the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship at the par-72 Ralston Creek Course.
Georgia Southern (+2) carded an first round 290 to claim a one-stroke lead of Wofford (+3) and three-stroke advantage over third place Samford (+5) after 18 holes. Chattanooga (+6) holds fourth place while Furman (+7) and College of Charleston (+7) are tied for fifth after day one of the 54-hole tournament.
Chattanooga's Stephen Jaeger (-6) birdied eight holes en route to an opening round 66 to fashion a four-stroke lead after round one. Appalachian State's Darren Cook (-2) and College of Charleston's Henry Smart (-2) are tied for second place at shooting 70 on the 7,178-yard layout.
Reeves, the 2010 SoCon champion and 2011 South Carolina Amateur champion, birdied three of his final five holes to shoot a three-under 33 on the back nine and pull within six strokes of the leader. The Greenville, S.C., native played Ralston Creek's 10 par-fours at three-under par.
Second round action at the SoCon Championship is set for 8 a.m. on Monday morning with the Paladins slated to tee off beginning at 9:40 a.m. Final round play is scheduled for Tuesday with the tournament champion earning an automatic berth to the NCAA regionals.
