Aiken, S.C. – The Furman men's golf team fired a first round 286 to share first place, but faded to ninth after a 21-over 301 in second round action on Monday at the 15th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par-70, 6,617-yard Palmetto Golf Club.
Seniors Matt Broome (+3) and Austin Reeves (+5) each carded an even par 70 during the morning round and Furman shot six-over 286 to share first place with Clemson and South Carolina after 18 holes. The afternoon round, however, saw the Paladins struggle to a 301 that left Furman (+27) 17 stroke behind co-leaders South Carolina (+10) and Virginia (+10). Clemson (+11) and East Carolina (+15) grabbed third and fourth place, respectively, with Augusta State (+21) and Liberty (+21) tied for fifth place.
Broome managed a share of sixth place through 36 holes posting rounds of 70 and 73. Reeves is tied for 16th while Greg Carrier (+7) is tied for 36th on the strength of an opening round 70.
Virginia's Ben Kohles (-1) and Clemson's Crawford Reeves, brother of Furman's Austin Reeves, shared the leader after two rounds at one-under par.
Final round action in the 54-hole tournament is slated for Tuesday at 9 a.m.
