Sapphire, N.C. -- The Furman men's golf team is in ninth place after the opening round of The Hummingbird Intercollegiate on Monday at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
The Paladins are 13 stroke behind first place Gardner-Webb (-2), but just eight strokes back of second place and 19th-ranked UAB (+3) in the 36-hole tournament. Samford (+6) is in third place with Francis Marion (+7), Wofford (+7) and Vanderbilt (+7) tied for third after 18 holes.
Greg Carrier paced the Paladins in the opening round with a 73 to grab a share of 23rd place. The junior notched two birdies on an even-par front nine and recorded eight pars on the back nine to help Furman to an 11-over 295.
Furman's Matt Broome, Austin Reeves and Johnny Kyger each posted a three--over 74 to share 32nd place on Monday. Reeves recovered from back-to-back double bogeys at No. 2 and No. 3 to register four birdies, while Broome was in contention for the lead until a quadruple bogey at No. 17.
Kristopher Gray of Gardner-Webb took the first round lead with a four-under par 67. A group of three golfers are tied for second at three-under par.
