Florence, S.C. -- Senior Matt Broome (-8) shot a final round 71 to claim individual medalist honors and lead Furman to a team title on Tuesday in the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate at the par-72, 7,062-yard Country Club of South Carolina.
The Barrington, R.I., native finished one shot ahead of Charleston Southern's David Denlinger (-7) and USC Aiken's Kyle Godsman (-7) to claim his second career tournament title and give the Paladins their second Springhill Suites Intercollegiate crown. The win marked the first for both Broome and the Furman team since the Paladins swept honors at the Big 5 Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa., last October.
"This was a great start to the year for us," said Furman head coach Todd Satterfield. "The guys played very well and I'm very proud of them."
Broome (68-69-71=208) played the Country Club of South Carolina's par fours at seven-under over 54 holes while notching 14 birdies over three rounds. Fellow senior Austin Reeves (E), who captured the Southern Conference title on the same course in 2010, claimed 18th place while Paladin freshman Josh Chay (+2) recorded a 25th place finish following a final round 72. Freshman Michael Borton and junior Johnny Kyger, who totaled a tournament-high three eagles on the week, tied for 28th place at three-over par.
The Paladins (-8) shot 288-283-285=856 to claim a four-shot victory over second place Samford (-4) and USC Aiken (-4). Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern, College of Charleston, Radford, Francis Marion, Elon and Georgia Southern rounded out the top 10 in a 15-team field that included every SoCon school except Chattanooga and UNC Greensboro.
Broome and the Paladins will look to defend their Big 5 Invitational titles when they return to Philadelphia, Pa.,, October 8-9.
