Wynn, Paladins Roll Past VMI, 49-13

LEXINGTON, VA. -- Devin Wynn rushed for 112 yards and three touchdowns and Furman's offense generated a season high 590 total yards to power the Paladins past VMI, 49-13, in Southern Conference football action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field at Foster Stadium.

The win is the fifth in the last six games for Furman (5-4, 5-2 SoCon), which remains in the SoCon regular season title hunt with only next Saturday's finale at Mercer remaining.

Wynn, a sophomore tailback, scored on touchdown runs of 13, 1 and 43 yards to highlight the Paladins' balanced attack, which generated 288 yards on the ground and 302 passing yards.  Freshman Corey Watkins ran for 78 yards and two scores, and quarterback Harris Roberts, a redshirt senior, completed 13-of-17 passes for 261 yards and two scores before exiting the contest in the third quarter in favor of backups.

The Paladins' defense registered three sacks in the contest, including two by redshirt freshman bandit Adrian Hope, who entered the game ranked second in the FCS with 10.5 sacks.  Hope had six tackles, joining linebackers Elijah McKoy and Donavan Perryman for team high honors.

Furman wasted no time in taking control, scoring on its first three first quarter possessions with Wynn capping 83 and 80 yard drives with touchown runs of 13 and 1 yard, and tight end Jake Walker hauling in a 33-yard touchdown pass one play after Aaquil Annoor recovered a VMI fumble at the Keydet 33.

The two teams traded scores before Walker connected again with Harrison, collecting a crossing route pass, turning upfield, and outrunning the VMI secondary on a 69-yard scoring play to stretch the advantage to 35-7 with 1:18 remaining in the half.

The Paladin defense made the advantage stand up when nose guard Parker Stokes and linebacker Elijah McKoy combined to tackle Keydet quarterback Reece Udinkski at the Furman 3-yard line on the final play of the first half.

Wynn and Watkins finished off their strong performances with touchdown runs in the third quarter — Wynn on a 43-yard bolt up the middle, and Watkins on a 2-yard plunge with 6:13 on the clock for a 49-7 lead.

The Paladins had their way with the Keydets on third down, converting 11-of-14 opportunities.

The victory was Furman's fourth straight over VMI.

Kickoff for next Saturday's Furman-Mercer ESPN+ live streamed game is set for 3:00 p.m.
