CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Dominique Allen scored on 1-yard plunge with 2:13 remaining to lift FCS 15th-ranked The Citadel past Furman, 19-14, Saturday evening at Johnson Hagood Stadium in the 96th meeting of the Southern Conference's oldest football rivals.

Allen's decisive score came after he connected with DeAndre Schoultz on a 29-yard completion for a first down to the Furman 46, and two plays later found Tyler Renew open in the flat for a 21-yard connection to the Furman 15.  Five straight rushes ensued with Allen bulling over from 1-yard out for the go-ahead touchdown.  The two-point conversion play failed, leaving The Citadel with a 19-14 lead.

Furman's last possession fizzled, ending with a Malik Diggs  interception -- The Citadel's third pickoff of the game -- at the Bulldog 35 with 1:33 remaining.

The Paladins (0-2, 0-1 SoCon) trailed 13-7 at halftime but took a 14-13 third quarter lead by moving 67 yards in seven plays, the big play coming on a 31-yard hookup from quarterback P.J. Blazejowski to Andrej Suttles to the Bulldog 1.  Two plays later Blazejowski crossed the goal line to tie the game, and Jon Croft Hollingsworth's PAT gave Furman the lead.

Furman's defense, which limited the Bulldogs (2-0, 2-0 SoCon) to just 25 third quarter yards, surrendered a 50-yard pass to the Paladin 30 on the first play of the fourth quarter but saw Citadel miss a 42-yard field goal.  An interception at Furman 33 on the enusing series gave Citadel another chance, but Furman's defensive unit stopped the Bulldogs inches short of a first down at the Paladin 24 with 9:36 remaining.

The Paladins managed a first down on their next series before being forced to punt.  Facing a third-and-seven play at its own 25, Allen found Shoultz open for a 29-yard pickup to the Furman 46, which led to the go-ahead touchdown.

Furman took advantage of a Citadel fumble on the opening kickoff of the game to grab the lead.  Nick Miller dislodged the ball from Bulldog return man Quinlan Washington, and Quandarius Weems recovered it at the Bulldog 25 to set up a 12-yard scoring strike from Blazejowski to Suttles.

The Citadel answered with a 16-play, 75-yard drive for a 1-yard Jordan Black touchdown run that tied it at 7-7.

The lone score of the second quarter came after a Bulldog punt was fumbled by Suttles at the Furman 15 and recovered by the Citadel's Khafari Buffalo at the Paladin 4.  Two runs by Black found the end zone to put Citadel up, 13-7.

Furman tried to narrow the gap before intermission, driving to the Bulldogs 31 but a Hollingsworth 47-yard field goal try missed.

The Citadel finished the game with a 298-272 advantage in total offense, running for 191 yards and passing for 107 on the strength of Allen, who went 3-for-3 for 100 yards.

Furman rushed for 70 yards and passed for 202 with Blazejowski connecting on 21-of-37 passes.
