Quick Start Helps Winthrop Past Furman, 93-74

Greenville, S.C. -- Winthrop shot 56.8% in the first half and built a 52-32 halftime lead en route to a 93-74 victory over Furman in non-conference men's basketball action on Wednesday night at Timmons Arena.

Forward Xavier Cooks tallied 24 points on 11-of-17 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles, while fellow forward Josh Ferguson hit 6-of-7 shots to finish with 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Winthrop (4-3) raced out to a 19-7 lead and extended its margin to as many as 22 points before carrying a 20-point margin into the locker room. The Eagles stretched their lead to 24 points early in the second half before John Davis III and Clay Mounce helped pull the Paladins back within 16 points before the 10-minute mark, but the Eagles would not allow Furman to get any closer.

Anders Broman totaled 13 points and Nych Smith came off of the bench to score 10 for Winthrop. The Eagles shot 50.7% for the game, connected on 8-of-25 three-point attempts and converted on 15-of-20 trips to the foul line. Winthrop fashioned a 43-36 edge on the boards and outscored Furman 54-34 in the paint behind the play of Cooks and Ferguson.

Senior Daniel Fowler led the Paladins with 16 points, while junior Matt Rafferty notched his second double-double of the season with 13 points, 11 rebounds and a team-high four assists. Davis III contributed 12 points for the Paladins, who shot just 36.7% and hit only 5-of-24 three-point attempts. Mounce scored 11 points on 6-of-7 shooting at the foul line as Furman made good on 25-of-31 free throw tries as a team.

Furman (4-3) continues its homestand on Saturday at 4 p.m. when it welcomes Tennessee Tech into Timmons Arena. The first 350 fans will receive a free rally towel and the Paladins will be signing their 2017-18 team poster following the contest.
