Greenville, S.C. -- Sophomore John Davis III scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures as Furman downed North Greenville, 90-57, in exhibition men's basketball action on Friday evening at Timmons Arena.
Davis III connected on 5-of-6 three-point tries and the Paladins made good on 11-of-33 attempts beyond the arc to outscore the Crusaders 33-0 from three-point range. Freshman Matt Rafferty drained all six of his field goal attempts to add 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while junior Kris Acox notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Andrew Brown rounded out the Paladins' double figure scorers by tallying 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting off of the bench.
"It was a good team effort by our guys tonight," said third-year Paladin head coach Niko Medved, following his team's only preseason exhibition. "We came out and did what we had to do. We really shared the ball and had a very balanced offense tonight. A lot of guys got involved on the offensive end and I thought we played with pretty good pace."
Furman limited North Greenville to just one field goal in the opening 10 minutes to race out to a 25-3 lead. The Paladins, who shot 50% from the floor on the night, built a 48-22 halftime cushion by turning 13 Crusader turnovers into a 20-0 advantage on points off turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play.
North Greenville trimmed the margin to 20 points at 50-30 early in the second half, but the Paladins reeled off a 19-6 run, capped by eight straight points from senior Larry Wideman, to pull away.
"We still have a lot of work to do," said Medved. "I wasn't pleased with the rebounding. We gave up too many points in the paint to them, but for the most part, the kids came out with great energy. This is a good building block for us as we go into these last two weeks before we get cranked up for real."
Furman finished with a 40-38 rebounding edge and 30-3 advantage in points off of turnovers. The Paladin bench accounted for 45 points on the night.
Korval McElroy paced the Crusaders with 13 points, while Justin Dotson added 11. North Greenville shot just 36.4% from the field and failed to connect on a three-pointer on 13 tries.
The Paladins open the regular season on Friday, November 13, when they host Big South Conference member Presbyterian in a 7 p.m. contest at Timmons Arena.
