Student-Athletes Help With Furman Sustainability

Oct. 26, 2006

Greenville, S.C. - The Furman volleyball and women's soccer teams helped to clean up the Furman campus on Wednesday afternoon as part of Furman's Year of the Environment.

Wednesday marked a nationwide initiative of campuswide sustainability as schools across the nation used the day for campus beautification. Three groups of Furman students, faculty, and staff worked to clean trash and debris from the Furman lake, and surrounding streams and trails.

"We were really excited to be a part of Campus Sustainability Day," said head volleyball coach Michelle Young. "Furman has put a lot of effort and planning into the Year of the Environment, and we were glad to help clean up our campus."

The campus clean-up was just one event taking place during Campus Sustainability Day. Earlier in the afternoon, students and faculty participated in a live webcast to learn how other schools around the country are helping to make their campuses more sustainable. Following the campus clean-up initiative, the day concluded with a viewing of "An Inconvenient Truth," Al Gore's global warming documentary.
