Purser Named To SoCon Preseason Team

SPARTANBURG, South Carolina - Furman's Lady Paladin volleyball team was picked to finish fourth in the 2005 Southern Conference race, with junior Whitney Purser earning the nod as a preseason all conference selection. Both the poll and the preseason team were voted on by league coaches, who picked the College of Charleston to repeat as Southern Conference champions.
The College of Charleston received nine of the 11 possible first place votes to take the top spot on the poll. Appalachian State was selected second, garnering two first-place votes while Georgia Southern, Furman, and Davidson round out the top five. Elon, Chattanooga, and Western Carolina were picked sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively with Wofford, UNC Greensboro and The Citadel rounding out the 2005 preseason poll.
Furman returns five of six starters from last year's squad that went 15-16 overall, with a fourth-place 8-8 mark in the Southern Conference.
The volleyball coaches also selected their preseason all-conference team. The College of Charleston led the way with five selections to the preseason all-conference squad, while Furman was represented by junior Whitney Purser (Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla). Last season, Purser led the Furman squad in kills per game and was ranked sixth in the Southern Conference. She also paced the Lady Paladins in aces, and was second on the team in digs.
The Furman volleyball team kicks of the 2005 season on Sept. 2, with a 5 p.m. match at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla.
