Senior Chibuzo Agoucha led three Paladins in double-digit kills today as the Paladins fell short to College of Charleston, 3-2.
Furman came out strong, winning both the first and second games by scores of 30-20. The Paladins kept the Cougars to a team hitting percentage of .067 in the first two games, while Nicole Palazzo led Furman in the first game with 6 kills and Aguocha added 11 in game two.
Despite holding an 18-11 lead in the third game, Furman was unable to hold on for the win, allowing the Cougars to tie the score at 21, then take the game by a score of 30-28.
In a fourth game that saw 10 ties and 3 lead changes, the Paladins fought to keep the score close, but were again unable to rally, losing the game by a score of 30-27.
In the deciding game, the Paladins leapt out to an 8-4 lead before allowing the Cougars to come back and tie the score at 11. Furman again pulled ahead following a pair of kills by Palazzo and setter Courtney Stewardson, but the Cougars answered with a pair of kills by Tiffany Blum to tie the score again at 13, then finished the match with another kill from Blum and one from freshman Whitney Russell.
Senior Deanna Patrick led four Lady Cougars in double-digit kills with 16 kills. Patrick also contributed 4 total blocks while setter Lindsey Kane led the net defense with 5 total blocks. Libero Megan Parkerson led all players with 44 defensive saves.
For the Paladins, Aguocha notched 29 kills while senior Kerry Wooten added 10 and a .300 attack percentage. Junior Palazzo notched a double-double with 15 kills and 13 block assists. Sophomore Emily Harby also added 10 block assists.
Libero Brooke Ellison led the Paladin defense with 32 digs. Outside hitter Alison West also added 23 digs, and Aguocha recorded a double-double, adding 18 digs. The Paladins totaled 21 team blocks and 7 service aces, compared to the Cougars 14 blocks and 2 service aces.
The Paladins finish out the regular season with a 20-8 overall record and a 13-5 Southern Conference record, while Charleston finishes 22-7 overall and 16-2 in the league. Both teams will travel to Chattanooga to take part in the Southern Conference Tournament beginning Nov. 15.
