The Western Carolina Catamounts surprised Furman tonight, upsetting them in a 3-1 win.
The Catamounts defeated the Paladins 30-24 in game one, helped by numerous Furman hitting errors.
The Paladins regrouped in game two, taking an early lead and beating the Catamounts 30-24.
Games three and four saw the Catamounts take advantage of Furman's mistakes, and winning both by scores of 30-25. Western Carolina was able to out-block and out-hit the Paladins to take the win.
The Catamounts were led by Meredith Harmon's 17 kills, two solo blocks, and five block assists. Libero Liz Rondone led the defense with 22 digs.
Junior Alison West led the Paladins with 13 kills, while Chibuzo Aguocha, Kerry Wooten, and Nicole Palazzo each contributed 11 kills. Freshman libero Brooke Ellison added 18 digs, and West notched another double-double with 16 defensive saves for the night.
With the win, Western Carolina improves to 9-22 on the season and 4-12 in the Southern Conference, giving the team a chance to make into the eight-team field of the Southern Conference Tournament. Furman falls to 19-7 overall and 4-12 in league play.
The Paladins will finish out the regular season at home, with matches against The Citadel and College of Charleston.
