Furman Sweeps The Citadel on Saturday

Greenville, S.C. – Behind 23 kills from Courtney Hoffman and Neci Harris, Furman volleyball swept The Citadel 25-14, 25-12, 26-24 on Friday night. Saturday's win moves Furman to 6-9 on the year (2-2 SoCon), while the loss drops The Citadel to 7-8 on the year (2-2 SoCon). Furman was a perfect 2-0 inside Alley Gym this weekend, finishing without dropping a set.

Hoffman led Furman with 13 kills, a .381 hitting percentage, and two blocks, while Harris finished with 10 kills and a career-high .714 hitting percentage and two blocks. Jordan McNeill tallied a team-high 13 digs, while Meg DeMaar added 11 and Jamila Johnson added 10. Carris Campbell put down five kills and a team-high three blocks, while tallying a .571 hitting percentage.

The teams traded points early in the first until Jamila Johnson served three-straight points to push Furman's lead to 13-9 and force the Bulldogs to call a timeout. The Citadel cut the lead to 13-10 out of the timeout, but Furman used a 5-1 run to open an 18-11 advantage, prompting the Bulldogs to burn their final timeout of the set. The Paladins kept their foot on the gas, using a 7-3 run to close out the set and take it, 25-14, for a 1-0 match lead.

Set two was all Paladins from the beginning, as Furman jumped out to an 8-1 lead. The Paladins continued to lead, closing out the set on a 10-3 run, capped off with a kill by Lydia Morris to take the second, 25-12, for a 2-0 match advantage.

A quick 4-0 run put Furman up 9-5 in the third, before the teams traded points until Furman used three-straight points to take a 19-14 lead. The Citadel battled back to cut the lead to one at 19-18, before Furman pushed the lead back to three at 21-18. The Bulldogs used a 4-1 run to tie the set at 24, but back-to-back kills by Hunter Thompson and Carris Campbell gave the Paladins the 26-24 set three victory and 3-0 match win.

Mellanie King led The Citadel with 11 kills, while Caricia Rodriguez totaled 10 digs.

Furman is back in action next weekend, traveling to Western Carolina and ETSU.
