Greenville, S.C. – Despite four Paladins turning in double-doubles, Appalachian State was able to outlast Furman 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 21-25, 22-25) on Thursday night inside Alley Gym, spoiling Furman's 2018 home opener. The win moves the Mountaineers to 7-4 on the season, while the loss drops Furman to 4-6 on the season.
Madison Gresham and Jordan McNeill led the Paladins with 13 kills, and they each turned in a double-double with 15 and 12 digs, respectively. Carris Campbell put down 12 kills and a .550 hitting percentage, while Jamila Johnson added 10. Hunter Thompson dished out 49 assists and turned in a game-high 19 digs, as the Paladins out-dug the Mountaineers 72-62.
Appalachian State jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first set, which would prove to be the difference in the match. The teams traded points until the Mountaineers used a 4-0 run to take a 24-16 lead, eventually taking the first set, 25-18, for a 1-0 match lead.
Furman opened up an early 7-2 lead in the second set, pushing it to six at 11-5 before Appalachian State called its first timeout. The Mountaineers cut the lead to 13-11, then tied the set at 17. Furman used three-straight points to take a 20-17 lead, before Appalachian State cut the lead to two at 20-18. Furman closed it out on a 5-2 run, however, taking set two, 25-20, to tie the match at one.
The teams traded points in the third set until Appalachian State used a 6-2 run to close it out, 25-21, and take a 2-1 match lead. The teams traded three-point runs in the fourth, until the Mountaineers used a 6-1 run to grab match point at 24-21, eventually taking set four, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.
Furman is back in action on Friday, taking on Winthrop in a 7:00 p.m. match inside Alley Gym.
