Greensboro, N.C. – Behind 21 kills from Holly Behrends, UNCG downed Furman, 3-1, on Friday night inside Fleming Gymnasium. The win moves the Spartans to 15-10 on the year and 8-5 in SoCon play, while the loss drops the Paladins to 17-9 and 11-2 in SoCon play.
Christen Sikora led the Paladins with 16 kills on the night, while hitting .300. Nicole Mack added 13 kills and just two errors for a .314 hitting percentage. Meg DeMaar turned in a team-high 18 digs, while Courtney Hoffman added seven kills and four blocks.
The teams traded points in the first set, until UNCG used a 6-1 run to take a 12-9 advantage. The Spartans continued to add to the lead, pushing it to five at 22-17, before taking set one, 25-20. In set two, Furman and UNCG exchanged runs until the Paladins closed out the set on a 7-0 run, to take it 25-18 and tie the match at one.
Set three was tight from the opening serve, as the teams went back-and-forth for the majority of the set. The Spartans used a 5-1 run to grab set point at 24-20, and taking set three, 25-21. Furman rattled off five-straight points in set four to take a 17-15 lead, but the Spartans used a 5-2 run to regain the lead at 20-19. The Paladins tied the set at 22, but UNCG used three-straight points to win set three, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.
Behrends added a .400 hitting percentage and 12 digs on the night, while Ashley Muench turned in 17 kills and 14 digs for a double-double.
The Paladins are back in action on Saturday, taking on Western Carolina in Cullowhee at 6:00 p.m.
