Furman Sweeps The Citadel in Midweek Clash


Greenville, S.C. – Behind a .384 team hitting percentage and 36 combined kills by the outside hitters, Furman swept The Citadel (25-20, 25-19, 25-5) on Wednesday night inside Alley Gym. The win moves Furman to 17-8 on the year and 11-1 in SoCon play, while the loss drops the Bulldogs to 8-23 and 2-12 in SoCon play. 

Nicole Mack led Furman with 13 kills and a .435 hitting percentage, while adding 10 digs for a double-double, while Christen Sikora added 12 kills and a .526 hitting percetgae, as well as 12 digs for a double-double. Jamila Johnson put down 11 kills and a .350 hitting percentage on the night. Furman out-dug The Citadel 47-26 and held the Bulldogs to a .140 hitting percentage, including a -.138 percentage in the final set.

The Citadel used a 5-0 run to open a 5-3 lead in the first set, before taking a 10-7 advantage. The Bulldogs held a two-point lead at 13-11, then the Paladins used an 8-2 run to take a 19-15 lead and force The Citadel to call its first timeout. The teams then traded points to end the set, giving Furman the 25-20 set one win and 1-0 match lead.

The Citadel opened up an early 8-4 lead in the second set, before the Paladins cut the lead to two at 12-10 on a kill by Johnson. The Citadel pushed the lead back to three at 13-10, but Furman then used a 13-3 run to take a 23-16 advantage. The Bulldogs cut the lead to four at 23-19, but Furman used a kill by Carris Campbell and an ace by Abbey Crawford to take set two, 25-19.

DeMaar, Sikora, and Mack served the Paladins on 4-0, 5-0, and 11-0 runs, respectively, to lead the Paladins to a 25-5 set three win and 3-0 match victory.

The Citadel was led by Sharliss De Jesus with 7 kills, while Sarah Dobrich added three blocks.

Furman is back in action this weekend, taking on UNCG on Friday night in Greensboro, N.C., before taking on Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C., for the Paladins' final two road games of the season.
