Macon, Ga. – Morgan Macgilvary put down 17 kills and Mercer rallied in set three to sweep the Paladins, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon in Macon. The loss drops the Paladins to 8-11 and 4-3 in SoCon play, while the win moves the Bears to 11-8 and 3-4 in SoCon play.
The Paladins were led by Taina Joseph with 11 kills and a .556 hitting percentage, while Annie Bierman added 10 kills and 13 digs for a double-double. Hunter Thompson and Ashton Stocker combined for 41 assists, while Cynthia Ley led the Paladins with four blocks. Furman out-killed Mercer 44-41, but hit just .220 to Mercer's .267 on the afternoon.
Mercer used an early 4-0 run to jump ahead of the Paladins in set one, before Furman rallied to tie the set at 19, 20, and 21. The Paladins couldn't capitalize, however, giving up another 4-0 run to the Bears, allowing Mercer to take set one, 25-21, for a 1-0 match lead.
After the Bears took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-16 second-set victory, it was Furman that jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in set three. The teams traded runs before the Paladins opened their biggest lead of the day, holding a 22-16 advantage over the Bears. Furman again couldn't hang on, allowing Mercer to go on a 9-1 run to take set three, 25-23, and the match, 3-0.
Furman is back in action on Sunday afternoon, facing The Citadel in Charleston at 2:00 p.m.
