Greenville, S.C. – Annie Bierman put down 17 kills and Furman hit .423 as a team and swept Samford, 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-170, on Friday night in Alley Gym. The win moves Furman to 13-6 on the year and 7-2 in SoCon play, while the loss drops the Bulldogs to 8-10 and 3-5 in SoCon play.
Furman held Samford to a .172 hitting percentage and just 29 kills, while the Paladins racked up 48 kills. Bierman hit .351 and added five digs, while Jamila Johnson added eight kills and a team-high .800 hitting percentage. Meg DeMaar added a team-high 15 digs and Jo Wilks dished out 39 assists.
Furman used five kills to jump out to an 11-4 lead in set one, forcing Samford to call a timeout. The Paladins increased their lead to 13-4, before Samford used a 7-4 run to cut the lead to six at 17-11, then again at 19-13. Furman then closed out the set on a 6-2 run to take set one, 25-15, for a 1-0 match lead.
The Paladins again jumped out to an early lead at 6-2, prompting Samford to take an early timeout. Out of the timeout, the Bulldogs cut the lead to one at 13-12, but Furman used three-straight points, including two kills by Jamila Johnson to push the lead back to four at 16-12 and force Samford to use its final timeout of the set. The teams then traded points until Furman used four-straight points, including a kill and two solo blocks by Taina Joseph to take set two, 25-18, for a 2-0 lead in the match.
Furman opened up another big lead early in set three, forcing a Samford timeout at 5-2 and pushing the lead to seven at 9-2. The Bulldogs cut the lead to three at 15-12, forcing a Furman timeout, but the Paladins closed out the set on a 10-5 run to take set three, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.
Furman is back in action tomorrow as it plays host to The Citadel at 6:00 p.m. in a homecoming match.
