UNCG Downs Furman, 3-0

Greensboro, N.C. – Behind double-digit kills by Jessica Brezwyn and Ashley Muench, UNCG downed Furman, 3-0 (25-16, 28-26, 25-21) on Saturday night. The loss drops the Paladins to 11-6 overall and 5-2 in SoCon play, while the win moves the Spartans to 12-8 and 2-3 in SoCon play. 

Annie Bierman led Furman with 14 kills, while Taina Joseph and Carris Campbell each added six. Jamila Johnson put down five kills, all in the third set, while Meg DeMaar led the team with 17 digs.

The teams traded points early in set one, until, with the score tied at nine, UNCG used a 6-0 run to open up a 15-9 lead over the Paladins. The Spartans continued to hold the momentum, pushing its lead to 20-12 and forcing Furman to use a timeout. Furman cut the lead to five at 20-15, but UNCG held on to take the first set, 25-16, for a 1-0 lead in the match.

Furman and UNCG again traded points early in set two, until the Spartans opened up a 16-13 lead. Furman then used a 4-0 run to take a 17-16 lead and force UNCG to call a timeout. Out of the first timeout, back-to-back UNCG errors pushed Furman's lead to 19-16, prompting UNCG to take its final timeout of the set. The Paladins pushed the lead to 22-18, but three-straight points by UNCG cut the lead to one at 22-21, forcing a Furman timeout. Out of the timeout, the teams traded points until the Spartans tied the set at 23, forcing the Paladins to take another timeout. The teams traded points again until the Spartans stole the second set, 28-26, for a 2-0 match lead.

Set three started much like the first two, with the teams trading points until UNCG opened up a three-point lead at 16-13, prompting a Furman timeout. Out of the timeout, the Paladins grabbed the momentum from the Spartans, tying the set at 17, 18 and 19. UNCG pushed the lead back to three at 22-19, forcing another Furman timeout, and the Spartans held on to the lead for the rest of the set, taking it 25-21, and winning the match, 3-0.

Furman is back in action one week from today, as the Paladins travel to Mercer for its only match of the week.
