STATESBORO, GA. – Moriah Bellissimo hit .455 with 11 kills as the Georgia Southern volleyball team blanked Furman, 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-16), Friday at Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro, Ga.
In a tight first set, the teams battled through nine ties to settle at 19-apiece before the Eagles won five out of the next six points to reach match point at 24-20. The Paladins put together three-straight points off back-to-back kills from senior Natalie Braun and a kill by junior Christina Dorismond to come within one at 24-23, but a final kill by Bellissimio gave Georgia Southern the 25-23 set victory.
Furman held a slight 5-3 advantage to open set two, but Georgia Southern connected on four-straight points to take a 7-5 lead. The Paladins remained within one at 8-7, before the Eagles went on an 11-2 run to build a 19-9 advantage. After Georgia Southern stretched the lead to 22-10, Furman scored three-straight points off a kill from freshman setter Jo Wilks, a service ace by junior libero Elle Ross, and an Eagle attack error, but Georgia Southern took three of the last four points of the set for a 25-14 win.
Following the break, the teams were deadlocked at 9-apiece when the Eagles again put together an 11-2 run, taking a 20-11 lead. The teams traded points back and forth to end the set, as Georgia Southern held on for a 25-16 set victory to clinch the match.
Dorismond led the Paladins with 10 kills, while Braun paced the Paladin defense with 12 digs. Wilks posted a team-high 34 assists in the match-up.
Meredith Paskert added 11 kills for Georgia Southern (23-6, 14-1 SoCon), and Alexandra Beecher collected 15 digs in the win. Kate Van Dyke led the Eagles with 37 assists.
Furman (21-9, 9-6 SoCon) concludes the regular season Saturday when the Paladins play at Davidson. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
