GREENVILLE, S.C. – Senior Chandler Ambrester notched her fifth-straight double-double, collecting career highs with 26 kills and 23 digs, to lead the Furman volleyball team past Chattanooga, 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-23), Saturday at Alley Gymnasium in Greenville, S.C.
Following an 11-11 tie to open the match, the Mocs reeled off five-straight points to take a 16-11 lead, but the Paladins answered with a 4-0 run to cut the lead to one. Chattanooga put together back-to-back points later for a three-point lead at 20-17 and eventually stretched the lead to four at 23-19. A Paladin kill from senior Caroline Adams kept Furman in the match, but Chattanooga held on for a 25-21 set win.
The Paladins came out strong in set two, building a quick 8-2 lead. Furman maintained a five-point advantage at 15-10 then stretched the lead to eight following three-consecutive winners, including a kill from freshman setter Jo Wilks and a kill by Ambrester. Up 22-16, the Paladins won the last three points of the set off three-straight kills from Ambrester, taking a 25-16 victory to tie the match at one set apiece.
After the break, the teams were tied at 7-all in set three when Furman went on a 4-0 run to build a 11-7 lead. The Mocs cut the lead to one at 11-12, but the Paladins collected back-to-back kills from junior Amanda Komisarow and Ambrester to stretch the lead to three. Chattanooga later trimmed the lead to one at 15-14. The lead remained one at 20-19 before the Paladins claimed the last five points of the set for a 25-19 win.
Chattanooga came out strong to open set four, building a 16-9 lead before Furman reeled off eight-straight points to take a 17-16 advantage. The teams fought through five ties to settle at 23-all before consecutive kills from Komisarow and junior Christina Dorismond sealed the 25-23 set victory for the Paladins.
Wilks recorded her 11th double-double of the season, tallying 52 assists and 19 digs for Furman. Dorismond added 13 kills in the win, while junior libero Elle Ross collected 17 digs. Freshman Caitlyn Scioscia added 11 digs for the Paladins. Adams posted a team-high five blocks, while posting eight kills.
Chattanooga (10-16, 4-7 SoCon) was led by Sarah Batterton, who notched 13 kills. Libero Paula Passmore led the Mocs on defense with 30 digs, while setter Bridget Camacho collected 37 assists.
Furman (20-7, 8-4 SoCon) concludes its home season next weekend when the Paladins face Citadel Friday at 7 p.m. and College of Charleston Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
