SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior Chandler Ambrester recorded 16 kills to lead the Furman volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-21) victory over Wofford in Spartanburg Tuesday night.
The Paladins jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the opening set and maintained a five-point advantage until the Terriers cut the deficit to 14-12 following a kill by Amanda Liguori. Furman then reeled off four-straight points, including back-to-back kills from senior Caroline Adams, to seemingly have the set in hand at 18-12 and eventually pushed the lead to 23-15 before Wofford answered with an 8-1 run to come within one point at 24-23. A final kill from Ambrester sealed the 25-23 set victory for the Paladins.
Following a 3-3 tie at the start of set two, Furman scored four-straight to gain control of the set. The Paladins maintained a slight lead at 19-15 before Wofford scored three-straight winners to bring the deficit to one point. Furman responded by scoring six of the set's last seven points for a 25-19 win to lead 2-0 at the break.
The Paladins kept a one to two point lead at the beginning of the third set before the Terriers tied the match at 11-all. Furman put together a 6-3 run and maintained a slight lead at 18-16 before a Braun service ace completed a 5-1 Paladin streak to push Furman ahead, 23-17. Wofford came within three points at 23-20, then a Terrier service error gave the Paladins match point. Wendy Burnett notched a kill to keep Wofford in the match, but Adams recorded a final kill to give Furman a 25-21 set win.
Braun tallied a double-double, her 12th of the season, after posting 13 kills and 12 digs in the match-up. Adams hit a team-high .583 with eight kills and two blocks, and junior Christina Dorismond also contributed eight kills. Freshman Jo Wilks led the Paladins with 42 assists, while fellow rookie Caitlyn Scioscia paced Furman with 14 digs. Junior Elle Ross added 13 digs in the victory.
Liguori led Wofford (9-7, 0-4 SoCon) with 11 kills, and Bekah Dorsey notched a team-high 24 assists. Reagan Styles paced the Terrier defense with 12 digs.
Furman (13-5, 2-2 SoCon) hits the road this weekend for two key SoCon matches. The Paladins will play at The Citadel Saturday at 6 p.m. then face the College of Charleston Sunday at 2 p.m.
