WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Senior Natalie Braun recorded a double-double and hit .696 with 16 kills and 13 digs to push the Furman volleyball team past Wake Forest, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-20), Tuesday in Winston-Salem, N.C. With the win, the Paladins are 2-0 versus ACC opponents this season.
Following an 11-11 tie in the opening set, the Paladins held a slight advantage at 15-14 before putting together a 10-3 run to end the set. Fueled by the service of freshman Caitly Scioscia, Furman claimed the set's last five points, including a Scioscia set-point ace that gave the Paladins the 25-17 win.
Furman led throughout set two and built a 15-10 lead, but the Demon Deacons recorded a 7-2 run of their own to tie the match at 17. The Paladins answered, winning eight of the set's final ten points, including a back-to-back kill and service ace from senior Chandler Ambrester and consecutive kills by Braun, for a 25-19 set win to take a 2-0 lead at the break.
In set three, Furman quickly took a 9-3 lead. Wake Forest cut the advantage to four points at 21-17 following a 4-0 run, but the Demon Deacons would come no closer, as the Paladins took advantage of hitting errors in the match's final points for the 25-20 victory.
Ambrester posted a .314 attack percentage with 14 kills, nine digs, and two service aces for the Paladins, while senior Caroline Adams hit .417 with five kills and two block assists. Freshman Jo Wilks recorded her fifth double-double of the season, tallying a team-high 39 assists and 11 digs, and junior Elle Ross led Furman with 13 digs in the match-up.
Andrea Beck led Wake Forest (6-8) with eleven kills, while Megan Miller paced the Demon Deacon defense with 14 digs. Danae Rosendall recorded a team-high 21 assists in the loss.
Furman (12-4, 1-1 SoCon) will take on Southern Conference foe Samford Saturday at 7 p.m. in Birmingham, Ala.
