BOONE, N.C. – Maggie Seeds hit .500 with 11 kills as the Appalachian State volleyball team blanked Furman, 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-19) Saturday afternoon in the Holmes Center in Boone, N.C.
The Mountaineers jumped out to an early 7-3 lead to open set one, but the Paladins regrouped to tie the set at 8-8. The teams remained tied at 12 apiece before Appalachian State reeled off seven-straight points to build a 19-12 advantage, en route to a 25-18 set victory.
Furman built a quick 4-1 lead in the second set, but the Mountaineers came back to tie the score at 6-all. Again the teams were tied at 12 before Appalachian State put together a 7-2 run to take a 19-14 lead. The Paladins scored four-straight to come within one at 19-18, but were unable to tie the set. The Mountaineers led 23-20 before an Appalachian State service error, coupled with an ace from Furman senior Carolyn Nicoletti brought the Paladins within one. Furman then capitalized off a Mountaineer attack error to tie the set at 23, and a second Appalachian State error gave the Paladins a 24-23 lead. Appalachian State tied the match off a Furman hitting error, then a block by Seeds and Jessica Eley gave the Mountaineers a 25-24 lead. A final kill from Seeds sealed the 26-24 win and gave the Mountaineers a 2-0 set lead at the break.
The Paladins took a 3-1 lead to open the third set, but the Mountaineers tied the set at 3-3 and never looked back. Furman remained within two points at 10-8, but a four-point run by Appalachian State put the match out of reach at 14-8. The Mountaineers picked up a final 25-19 set win for the match victory.
Senior Kelly Kirby led the Paladins with seven kills, while junior Natalie Braun recorded 14 assists in the effort. Nicoletti paced the team with 15 digs, and senior Alexis Shaffer added six block assists for Furman.
Kasey Sauls recorded a double-double for Appalachian State (14-7, 6-1 SoCon) with 21 assists and 15 digs. Courtney Rhein added 12 digs, and Lauren Brown tallied 14 assists in the match-up
Furman (12-7, 5-2 SoCon) will play at Western Carolina Sunday at 3 p.m.
