DAVIDSON, N.C. – Junior Caroline Adams hit .375 with 12 kills to lead the Furman volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 25-14, 25-20) win over Davidson Thursday night at Belk Arena in Davidson, N.C.
The Paladins jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in set one and maintained a lead throughout the set, taking a 25-19 victory. The teams battled to a 4-4 tie to open the second set before the Wildcats began to pull away and led throughout the remainder of the set. Furman came within three at 22-19, but a kill from Wildcat Madison Benedict, followed by two Paladin hitting errors, gave Davidson a 25-19 set win to tie the match at one set apiece.
Following the break, the teams traded points before the Paladins reeled off four-straight scores to take a 5-2 lead to open the third set. The Wildcats remained within three points at 10-7, then the Paladins went on an 11-2 run to build a 21-9 advantage. Despite a late surge by Davidson, Furman took the set, 25-14, off a kill by senior Alexis Shaffer.
Furman led 10-5 early in the fourth set then built a seven-point lead at 20-13, before Davidson scored four-straight points to cut the margin to 20-17. Later the Paladins scored off a kill from junior Natalie Braun then took advantage of a Wildcat hitting error to push the lead to 23-18. Furman had match point after a bad Davidson set, but a kill from Tindall Sewell kept the Wildcats in the match. Junior Chandler Ambrester recorded a final kill, giving the Paladins a 25-20 set victory.
"We were really happy to earn a road win against a scrappy Davidson team tonight," said Furman head coach Michelle Young following the match. "Our offense was sporadic and needs some work, but overall, I was pleased with the win."
Furman senior Kelly Kirby recorded a double-double in the match, tallying a team-high 30 assists and 17 digs. Ambrester notched 10 kills and six digs, while Braun added 17 kills and nine digs. Sophomore Christina Dorismond hit .583 with eight kills, and fellow-sophomore Sarah McCarthy tallied 18 assists and eight digs in the match-up. Senior Carolyn Nicoletti posted 13 digs, and Shaffer led the Paladins with five blocks.
Davidson (10-5, 0-1 SoCon) was led by Caroline Brown, who recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Ariel Ley had 39 assists, and Molly Crenshaw led the Wildcat defensive attack with 26 digs.
Furman (8-5, 1-0 SoCon) will play at Georgia Southern Saturday at 1 p.m.
