CLEMSON, S.C. – Alexa Rand hit .611 with eleven kills to lead the Clemson volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-20) win over Furman Wednesday night at Jervey Gymnasium in Clemson, S.C.
After leading the first set 4-3, the Tigers went on a 7-1 run to break open the game and eventually took a 25-13 victory in the opening set. The second set proved to be much closer, with the teams battling to a 5-5 tie to open the set. Clemson scored three-straight points for an 8-5 lead, then Furman notched five-straight points for a 10-8 advantage. After seven ties, the teams were in a dead-lock at 22. The Tigers scored off a Paladin error and a kill by Rand for a 24-22 lead, but Furman answered with kills by Kelly Kirby and Natalie Braun to again tie the game at 24. Clemson capitalized off an additional kill from Rand and a Paladin ball handling error to end the set, winning 26-24.
Following the break, Furman jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the third set. Clemson cut the advantage to 8-5 then scored four-straight points for a 9-8 lead. After the Paladins tied the match at nine, the Tigers went on a 7-1 run to push their lead to 16-10. Furman answered by winning six out of seven points to slash the Tiger advantage to one point at 17-16. Clemson again stretched the lead to 21-16, but the Paladins won four out of six points to cut the Tiger lead to 23-20. A kill by Rand and a Furman attack error sealed the 25-20 victory for the Tigers.
Junior Chandler Ambrester led the Paladins with 11 kills, while Braun paced the team with 20 assists. Kirby recorded 17 assists and eight digs, and senior Carolyn Nicoletti tallied a team-high 10 digs in the match.
Sandra Adeleye hit .529 with 10 kills for Clemson (8-3), and Hannah Brenner led the Tigers with 23 assists.
Furman (7-4) will play Georgia Tech at Clemson on Thursday at 7 p.m.
