CofC Hands Furman Volleyball 3-0 Loss To Conclude Regular Season; Paladins To Face UNCG In 1st Round Of SoCon Tournament

CHARLESTON, S.C.  – The College of Charleston volleyball team defeated Furman 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, 25-22) Sunday afternoon in Charleston, S.C. in the Paladins' final regular season match of the 2010 season. 

The two teams were tied at 4-4 in the first set before the Cougars went on a 7-1 run to take an 11-5 lead.  Furman cut the lead to four at 12-8, but the College of Charleston then reeled off six-straight points to build an 18-8 advantage.  The Paladins reduced the lead again to 20-15 before the Cougars scored the last five points of the set for a 25-15 victory.

The College of Charleston jumped out to a 4-1 lead to open the second set, but Furman slowly chipped away at the Cougar lead.  After the Paladins cut the lead to one at 9-8, the College of Charleston went on a 6-1 run to build a 15-9 advantage.  Furman again rallied back, coming within one point of the Cougars at 19-18.  Later in the set, with the College of Charleston leading 23-21, Paladin junior Alexis Shaffer recorded a kill and Furman forced a Cougar error to tie the match at 23 apiece.  The College of Charleston then posted two-straight kills for a 25-23 set win to take a 2-0 set lead at the break.

After the teams battled to a 6-6 tie to open the third set, Furman went on a 4-1 run to take a 10-7 lead.  The College of Charleston then scored four-straight points for a 11-10 advantage, before the Paladins scored on six of the next eight points to build a 16-13 lead.  The Cougars scored three straight to tie the match at 16, and the teams fought back and forth through several tied scores.  With the score 21-21, the College of Charleston scored three-straight points for a 24-21 lead.  A block by Paladin sophomores Caroline Adams and Natalie Braun reduced the Cougar lead to two points, but a final kill by Ginny Phillips sealed the 25-22 victory in three sets for the College of Charleston.

Sophomore Chandler Ambrester posted 12 kills to lead the Paladins, while Adams added 10 kills and a team-high seven blocks.  Junior Kelly Kirby led Furman with 14 assists and added nine kills, and freshman Sarah McCarthy recorded a team-high seven digs, plus tallied 13 assists for the Paladins.

Elyse Chubb led the College of Charleston (27-5, 15-1 SoCon) with 13 kills and a .526 attack percentage.  Cole Dawley paced the Cougars with 42 assists and 7 digs, while Paige Johnson also added seven digs. 

Furman (17-11, 11-5 SoCon) will face UNC Greensboro on Friday at 10 a.m. in the opening match of the 2010 Southern Conference Tournament in Boone, N.C.
